Lesson 7: Walking in Righteousness — Living Daily with Christ

Introduction: The Call to Walk Differently

To walk in righteousness means to live each day in step with God — not just in belief, but in action, in thought, and in purpose. It’s more than a moment of salvation; it’s a lifestyle of ongoing surrender and transformation.

Micah 6:8 — "He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?"

1. What Is Righteousness?

Righteousness means being in right standing with God.

We are made righteous through faith in Jesus (Romans 5:1), but we also walk in righteousness as a response to that gift.

2 Corinthians 5:21 — "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

2. Salt and Light: Our Influence in the World

Jesus calls us not to blend in, but to stand out in love, truth, and integrity.

Matthew 5:13–16 — "You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

"Salt preserves, heals, and brings out flavor.Light exposes, leads, and brings clarity. To walk in righteousness is to be both salt and light — affecting the atmosphere around us.

3. A Daily Walk — Not a One-Time Decision

Righteousness is not something we accomplish once and move on from. It’s a daily choice:

To say no to sin

To choose grace over resentment

To seek God's will over our own

To live out love

Galatians 5:25 — “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

4. Practical Ways to Walk in Righteousness

Spend time in Scripture daily

Ask the Holy Spirit for conviction and guidance

Be quick to confess and turn from sin

Extend forgiveness

Guard your words and thoughts

Choose what honors God, even when no one’s watching

Psalm 119:105 — “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

5. We Do Not Walk Alone

My Experience with Daily Walking

Learning how to walk daily as a Christian has been one of the biggest struggles I've had. Not because I find it hard or that I don't want to, it's that I don't know how. Is this something that I shout from the rooftops? How can I be salt and light on a daily basis? What does this look like?

I'm learning now to relax and let the Spirit lead me. I don't have to go looking for ways — I can pray that God would open doors for me to tell of His goodness through my own testimony. And not to "cast pearls before swine," but to be available, willing, and obedient when He prompts.

Walking in righteousness for me also means taking my thoughts into captivity.

2 Corinthians 10:5 — "We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."

Whenever my thoughts wander to something that isn't beneficial, I'm learning to redirect them into something else. This is HARD and takes practice. I'm a lifelong daydreamer, making movies in my head constantly. It started as a way to disassociate from my own chaotic childhood. That, mixed with introversion and a highly imaginative and creative brain, can sometimes — well, a lot of the time — make for very dramatic, highly emotional movies in my head.

Walking with Christ is a relationship. He does not call us to righteousness and then leave us to figure it out alone.

John 15:4 — "Remain in me, and I will remain in you.

"Isaiah 30:21 — “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’

Reflection Questions

1. What does righteousness look like in my life right now?

2. Where am I tempted to blend in instead of shining light?

3. In what daily habits can I invite Jesus more fully?

4. Do I believe God is walking with me, even in small decisions?

Closing Prayer

“Lord, teach me to walk with You, not just in the big moments but in the daily rhythm of life. Help me to choose righteousness over compromise, to be salt and light in a dark world, and to trust that You are with me. Lead me by Your Spirit and transform me one step at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
